A New Direction


Dear friends,


I’m excited to announce a big pivot in my business.


Since founding Fielder six years ago, I've been dedicated to serving hedge fund clients. My team and I have won their confidence with our original, at times “outfield”, investment ideas. But one thing always bothered me. Why should hedge funds be the only ones benefitting from our work? Why shouldn’t individuals as well? People need guidance today more than ever. It’s a confusing environment with markets artificially inflated to historically high levels.


Friends and family often ask me, “What now?” The advice they receive from many traditional advisers makes me cringe. Surprisingly, few investors seem to realize that most advisers earn commissions from the investment products they recommend.1 This isn’t play money that’s at stake. It’s people’s life’s savings – your life’s savings.


This has led me to my “Jerry McGuire” moment. I’m proud to announce that Fielder is launching a private wealth advisory service for individuals that will take a unique approach. We will offer clients a truly holistic advisory solution that emphasizes transparency and encourages clients’ active engagement. Importantly, Fielder will do this as a fiduciary, which imposes a legal obligation to place your interests ahead of our own.


You are more than a pie chart.


Many advisers tend to narrowly focus on financial investments (stocks and bonds), giving little or no attention to alternatives like real estate and other non-financial assets. Beyond investments, there are other issues affecting your financial life, such as debt or estate planning, that deserve attention. Fielder’s holistic approach recognizes that your success should not depend on a cookie-cutter pie chart.


Know what you own.


It is important that you know what you own and why you own it. Since market prices invariably fluctuate, you need to have confidence in your holdings – especially during the big swings. This is why we advocate direct ownership of securities as much as possible. It’s a simple, “organic” approach that increases transparency, removes unnecessary intermediaries, and reduces costs. Fielder’s motto is, “Cut out the Wall Street mystery meat. It’s bad for your wealth.”


You, the expert.


Fielder encourages your participation – to whatever degree your interest and time allow – in selecting the best investments for your portfolio. Yes, you heard that right. We actually care what you think. Many wealth advisers essentially preach, “Let the professionals do it.” You’ll never hear that from us. Some of Fielder's best insights over the past 15 years have come from field sources – customers, competitors, and others with front-line perspective. People like you. Collectively, you’ve provided us with insights on companies, industries, and trends that Wall Street analysts never could. This underlies our conviction that you should harness your unique expertise to invest in shares of great companies that you know through your own experience. Granted, you’ll need some training. Fielder will be there to coach you to the degree you need it or want it.


You come first. It’s the law.


As a registered investment adviser (2), Fielder is held to a fiduciary standard. This means we are legally obligated to put your best interests ahead of our own. When we say, “You come first,” that’s not just a slogan. It’s the law. Fielder does not hold any client funds because we are not a brokerage firm. Nor are we affiliated with any brokerage firm. (Nine out of ten advisers are.(1) We do not get paid any commissions from the sale of any financial products. Our sole compensation is an advisory fee that is fully transparent to you. This means we’re a true “buy side” adviser, one that sits on the same side of the table with you. We work for you, not Wall Street.


If all this sounds like an ambitious calling, it is. Know that we embrace it with deep enthusiasm. Never has there been a more desperate need for innovation in wealth management. Though technology is a tool we’ll utilize to do this, people are the heart of our business. Fielder’s people can help you get back-to-the-basics. Engaging you. Empowering you.
